Lawmakers approve constitutional amendment declaring Costa Rica a “multiethnic country”
June 2nd, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) Lawmakers on Monday approved a bill in first debate that creates a constitutional amendment declaring Costa Rica a “multicultural and multiethnic” country.
In practice, the amendment has no specific effect in law, other than recognizing that the country’s population consists of a wide range of ethnicities and cultures.
Despite facing no opposition, the bill had spent more than a month in discussion in the Legislative Assembly, Rep. Mario Redondo pointed out.
“We should pay attention to the fact that we spent more than a month discussing a constitutional reform that we all agreed on, while there are many other important issues that need we to come to agreement and vote on,” Redondo said.
