Government will pay $330 million in holiday bonuses tomorrow

December 1st, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) The government will deposit some $330 million USD (¢174.5 billion) in holiday bonuses (Aguinaldo) for government employees on Tuesday.

 

Some 198,000 current and former government employees will receive an average of about $1,600 USD each (¢881,000), including active staff, temporary staff, and retirees.  That figure represents a 9% increase over 2013.

 

Some 42% of the bonuses will go to current and former employees of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP). The remaining 58% will be divided between current and former employees of the Legislature, Judiciary, the Ombudsman’s Office, the Comptroller General’s office and other government ministries.

 

The government’s $330 million in bonus payments represent 25% of the total $1.3 billion USD in mandatory holiday bonuses that are expected to be paid this year by the private and public sectors combined.

 

Nationally, the average bonus is expected to be ¢456,900, or about $862.

    I noticed that the budget was approved last Saturday for a 20% increase in spending and nothing cut from the bloated budget. What does this mean when over 60% borrowed. These are just estimates of what is expected private sector will pony up. Well Merry Christmas too all. Oh Boy!

      Everyone Listen to the next big Credit Down grade is coming i bet after christmas and expect the colon to be worth nothing soon. More small taxes soon or big taxes.

    The Criminals in Congress should be jailed, a 20% increase in the budget, All benefits should be cut to Congress past and Present! No bonus to any Government workers. No money to the Church ,instead it should pay a tax. Legalize and tax Marijuana.

    Numbers seem a bit off. 198,000 government workers past and present. Claim this is about 25%. Let us say 150,000 currently working or shall I say get paid and have a government job the rest retired. That means the private sector has 75% about 600,000 jobs coming in at about 800,000 total jobs in CR. I think the private sector over estimated… Any number crunchers out there and where am I wrong?

      Rusty, the government holiday bonuses represent 25% of the total $1.3 billion in bonuses that will be paid by private+public sector combined, not 25% of the number of workers/jobs. As you can see the average government bonus is twice that of the national average.

        I see National average and Government average two different things.. I misread.. Thanks for clarifying. However still over 198,000 on the government payroll. WOW!
