Authorities will investigate massive fish kill in Nosara River
September 18th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Rene Castro, Minister of Environment and Energy, said that the mass death of thousands of fish and shrimp near the mouth of the Nosara River would be investigated in order to determine those responsible.
The announcement comes after Marco Tulio Avila, president of the Nosara Development Assocation, filed complaints with the regional offices of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) and the National Animal Health Service (Senasa).
On the evening of September 3rd, local fishermen in Nosara found thousands of dead fish and shrimp near the mouth of the Nosara River.
Francisco Ramos of the Tempisque Conservation Area – as well as many locals – believe that agrochemical contamination is to blame.
This is not the first time dead fish or shrimp have appeared in the Nosara River. In April of 2012 on at least two occasions hundreds of fish and shrimp were found dead.
The discovery of a decomposing human corpse on September 11th in the same area of the river led some to speculate that the corpse could have been the source of the contamination. However, this is not possible, as the victim had been missing only since September 7th, four days after the mass fish kill.
