August 7th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Chris Gardner, the rags-to-riches entrepreneur, investor, stockbroker, author and motivational speaker, will hold a lecture at the Pedregal Event Center on August 28th.

Gardner was portrayed by Will Smith in the 2006 film, The Pursuit of Happyness.

Gardner will share with small and medium entrepreneurs his advice, including the importance of the “P”s of life: finding passion, being practical and having a plan; as well as his C-5 Complex: be clear, concise, compelling, consistent, and committed.

Gardner will be accompanied by Ismael Cala of CNN En Espanol, who will share is famous lecture “The Power of Listening.”

“These people are living testimonies of the fight that can make those who faithfully believe in their ideas and are able to transform their dreams into reality despite the obstacles that come along the way.  It is important for us to support this activity because it will help motivate many entrepreneurs to never abandon their goals,” said Mayi Antillon, Minister of Economy.

      Sponsored articles are always clearly identified as such, and we rarely do them. We were not compensated for this story. The man is famous, was portrayed in a popular Hollywood film, and I’m sure some of our readers wouldn’t mind seeing him speak.

            i did not ask for crime stories tim. i asked you to cover a recent explosion of violence against ticos and gringos in guanacoste because there is no verified news here just word of mouth. you told me you were not going to be like diario and print “:crack whore” stories and that i “barely spoke spanish”. note the quotation marks tim. don’t try to spin me. because all i will do is feed your words back to you.

            George, what I said was that we were not going to be Diaro Extra and report every “crackhead-on-crackhead’ crime or killing that wouldn’t affect 99% of our readers.

            The ‘barely speak Spanish” was not directed to you, it was directed towards you telling us to get into contact with gringos in the Coco/Guanacaste area, which we actually did.

            It all turned out to be no first-hand accounts, “I heard this from this other guy,” from folks that can ‘barely speak spanish’ as I pointed out.

            The point was that we’re not going to be an expat gossip rag where we repeat the latest expat rumors as though they were ‘news.’

            I will re-quote below my exact reply so that you can re-read it and realize that it was not directed to you:

            “George, I personally lived in Coco for more than three years and know the police and the OIJ that cover the area. There have been a few ‘crackhead on crackhead’ killings this year, for lack of a better term. Burglaries… well if we covered all of those…. If you have information we don’t on a murder there, please do send it along, in a verifiable form, and we’ll investigate it and publish it – expat rumors from people who barely speak Spanish don’t count. We don’t report heresay, we’re not a blog or tabloid.”

            It would also be wise to re-read the rest of the thread on the article itself as it provides better context:

            And we DID contact a woman you referred us to, if I remember correctly, who turned out to just give us here-say that she had no first hand knowledge of.

            as i said repeatedly, asking you to cover it was because rumor is not reliable although we do know a lot is happening, we can not be sure what is what. we rely on news crime coverage for verification. there is also more crime than is happening. you say you know coco so you must not be asking because there is little else talked about. who is this person that “hardly speaks Spanish” you?

    It would be interesting to see if Mr. Gardner addresses some of the crippling obstacles entrepreneurs in Costa Rica have to cope with, like rising corporate taxes and exceptionally high utility rates.
    On another note, it’s a shame that, once again, georgechapogas was allowed to hijack a comment thread. Is there not an app for trolls?
