Chinchilla bows to public pressure, will terminate highway concession

April 23rd, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) After weeks of protests, President Laura Chinchilla announced yesterday the decision to “terminate by mutual agreement,” the controversial highway concession of Route 1 between San Jose and San Ramon to Brazilian firm, OAS.

 

Chinchilla, however, continued to defend herself, saying that the concession had been granted “transparently,” and said she had always been open to dialogue.

 

During yesterday’s statement, Chinchilla eluded to the fact that the decision to terminate the agreement may come at the cost of some public funds.

 

“The vast majority of Costa Ricans do not believe the project is what we need.  Therefore, the government has decided to proceed to terminate [the concession] by mutual agreement, and [is taking action] to minimize the cost of the decision to the public purse,” Chinchilla said yesterday.

 

Chinchilla added that “petty political and economic interests” sought to “cause agitation” and hinder the project because the project “was not awarded to their companies.”

    Congratulations on your victory in blocking the selloff of
    Costa Rican public infrastructure to foreign organizations!

    Now you have the CR politicos squirming so do not let up on the pressure because they are no doubt working hard to find a way
    around your block on this selloff of your road system. Force the CR Government to fund their own infrastructure improvements. If you must use tolls to pay for your infrastructure improvements, make sure they have a start and end date to the tolls so when the roadway is paid for the tolls stop and the maintenance of the roadway is funded from normal taxation. Otherwise, the politicos will use the tolls as a hidden tax and continue to live beyond their means.

    Again, congratulations, do not stop until you
    get the roadway you want, you are in the driver’s seat, no pun intended, now!

      Lady Laura did this so no protest when Obama comes here. If you read her statement it clearly said it could be renegotiated with the Brazilian company. This is all smoke and mirrors for now. I do not trust a word coming out of her mouth, do you??

        Every place in the world today, the people are disgusted, protesting, organizing, persistent, focusing, demanding that governments recognize that their power is loaned to them my the People, for the People’s benefits and protection only. I appreciate the example Iceland is evolving…a good model to study, follow, and, perhaps, to copy.

    Actually, I think this illustrates Chinchilla’s core political weakness and the reason for her low popularity ratings. Ever since her first days, when she initially supported a pay raise for the legislature and then bowed to public pressure and opposed it, she has consistently flip-flopped on issues. While this may be construed as democratic, and it is, at the end of the day people want their politicians to be leaders rather than followers. But every time Chinchilla chooses to lead on an issue, she ends up changing her mind about it. Maybe she picks the wrong side of the fights to begin with–that rather than waffling could be her failing–but it’s hard to follow a leader who constantly changes directions.

      Your right on! she was never a leader a puppet of the PLN and Arias brothers at best. Now she going to make a money grab for her before she leaves office.

    Now if they can stop the Chinese from building the police academy that would help more CR folks to earn a living rather than give it away to a country that doesn’t need the jobs.
