April 9th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica’s New Socialist Party (NPS) is calling for demonstrations during Barack Obama’s visit to Costa Rica on May 3rd and 4th. Obama will be visiting the country to meet with Central American presidents as part of a summit of the Central American Integration System (SICA).
Organizers of the march say that Obama is primarily responsible for the political, economic, and human rights woes facing the region, such as the global economic crisis that has left millions of people at risk of extreme poverty, and the drug war in Mexico that has left more than 60,000 dead.
The organizers also say that Obama is primarily responsible for the occupation of Palestine by the State of Israel, “which has resulted in brutal human, social, political, and economic consequences for the Palestinian people.”
The party also condemned the “the conditions of exploitation, oppression, and humiliation suffered by the working class migrant daily, most of which are from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, in the United States.”
Earlier this week, the leader of the Citizen Action Party (PAC), and former presidential candidate, Otton Solis, asked Costa Ricans to avoid demonstrations during the U.S. president’s visit, in addition to cleaning their streets and even painting the facades of their homes.
President Laura Chinchilla has also asked Costa Ricans to avoid demonstrations during Obama’s visit.
