Surf the Caribbean!
It's not the only one, but it's a good place to start!
If you're new to the pastime and anxious to learn the right way, consider
attending a surf camp or school.
Beginners get intensive surf instructions from professional surfing
instructors.Camps are all-inclusive and many extras such as transportation,
home-cooked meals, great accommodations in the prime surfing area of Tamarindo/Playa
Grande, surfing photos, taxes, tips, and lots more are all included in the
price.
Also available are ecotours, volcano tours, canopy, river and jungle tours, and
professional massage. And one note: the camp fees also include round-trip
airfares.
Or you might try the Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School, offering not
only surf school but many other options, including reef and rainforest
adventures, whitewater experiences, and lots more.
I've included this one even though the surfing beaches used are on the Pacific,
not the Caribbean, because it's still Costa Rica, and the experience is very
different.
Maybe you're already a surfer, and don't need to attend a school or camp, but
just want to hit the beaches and get to the waves?
Costa Rica Caribbean Surf Spots will give you a
list (and a map) of the best places to surf, complete with descriptions of each
and the types of waves you can expect, too.
You can find a list of hotels on the best surfing beaches and also a package
offer at Let's Go Surfing! For still another list of surfing spots (Caribbean
coast) with descriptions of the waves, etc., visit
Costa Rica's Surfing Travel Guide.
Now if you don't want to visit Costa Rica, don't give up just yet. There are a
number of other Caribbean locations where you can have a great wave experience.
Puerto Rico has its share of waves. You'll find a list of local events, surf
reports, picture gallery, surf map, wave reports and rankings at Surf Puerto
Rico. T
Isla Margarita off the coast of Venezuela boasts a surfing beach at Playa
Parguito. Barbados also has an active surfing community and some super places to
enjoy the waves.
You can get some information about the locations and types of waves at Fun
Barbados, although the conditions haven't been updated in a while, or for more
info, visit the Barbados Surfing Association. You can get weather and surf info,
a list of upcoming events, read copies of the association newsletter, get island
information, and current conditions. There's even a hot line to call for
specifics. .
There are other places to surf in the Caribbeanl. The best waves are on the
windward sides of the islands and not all are safe areas for surfing, so use a
measure of caution before setting out, and get some local advice on water
conditions.
Yes, there are waves worth riding in the Caribbean! If you want a really great
ride. If you're already a surfer, here are good places to indulge...and if you
just want to learn, there are a few places that will get you started and teach
you the right way to surf safely.
