Cuban Literacy Program in Canada
Kingston, Canada - The
Cuban Yo Si Puedo (Yes I Can) basic literacy
teaching program, successfully runs in 23
other countries and is used in Canada to
fight functional illiteracy.
The Arrow might project currently benefits
150 people in Ontario, Manitoba and British
Columbia, and is run by six Cuban
specialists led by Matilde Patterson.
Patterson said the program was implemented
in April 2007, after a field research
revealed a large number of functionally
illiterate people, mostly among the
aboriginal population and especially youth.
The Cuban program Yes I Can has helped over
3.8 million people overcome illiteracy in
just six weeks in Spanish and English, and
in dialects like Aymara in Bolivia and
Misquito in Nicaragua. |
