Maneuver and Overweight Possible Causes For
Downing Of Helicopter
A failed maneuver and overweight are the
theories officials are working with to
determine the cause of the downed helicopter
in the area of the Cerro de la Muerte last
Friday, when the airship Tango India, Bravo
Bravo Tango (TI-BBT) disappeared from the
sky into the mountainous are and its
wreckage found days later.
Both the pilot and one passenger were found
mangled in the wreckage, along with an
estimated 370 kilograms of cocaine, which
authorities believe belongs to the Mexican
drug cartel, Sinaloa, and was being moved
from the southern zone to a hotel in
Turrialba.
Foul weather conditions have hampered
recovery of the bodies and the drugs and
keeping a group of police officials in the
cold and dampness of the forest. It wasn't
until early Wednesday morning that the
bodies were able to be removed from the
crash site and brought to the medical
forensic lab in Heredia.
The helicopter is believed to be flying at
an altitude of 11.000 feet in an attempt to
avoid hitting the side of the mountains of
the area. Although it was first reported
that the pilot had kept to the flight plan,
he was flying in an area no recommended.
Officials believe that pilot could have run
into dense fog while flying through a canyon
in the area, losing control and slamming in
to a mountain face. The overweight of the
drugs being carried on board is believed to
also be a contributing factor in the
accident.
