Inspection More Rigorous Beginning July 1
July 1 is the date for the tougher measures
for the annual vehicular inspections, whe
some 40 modifications to the norms are
introduced and to be applied to all vehicles
by Riteve. The new procedures have been
approved by the Consejo de Transporte
Público (CTP).
Some of the major changes is the upgrading
from "leve" (light) to "grave" (serious)
items like polarization of rear windows,
faulty rear view mirrors, back up or license
plate lights, bumpers, spare tire, faulty
windshield wipers and the lack of a fire
extinguisher and triangle.
All of the foregoing are now leves, which
means they are noted on the inspection
certificate, but are not a cause of a failed
inspection. Beginning on July 1, all those
items and more will have to be working.
The CTP will begin an information campaign
to notify owners of vehicles of the new
requirements that will be applied by Riteve.
Last year Riteve, inspected 743.440 vehicles
and reports that the majority of the failed
inspections were of heavy trucks and taxis,
whose major problems were related to the
brakes.
Riteve figures show that the rejection rate,
in general, rose slightly in 2008 over 2007,
when 51.5% of all vehicles failed the first
inspection, compared to 49.9% the year
before.
Riteve officials say that the number may not
go down this year as many vehicles owners,
facing the economic crisis, are not
maintaining their vehicles as they should.
