Arenal Is Part
of World’s Most Active Volcanoes Study
The Arenal Volcano in northwest Costa Rica
is being studied by scientists as part of an
international research project that includes
19 of the world’s most active volcanoes.
In Costa Rica, the entity coordinating this
study is the University of Costa Rica’s (UCR)
Central American School of Geology. The
project is run by a European Union program
on sustainable development, climate change
and ecosystems.
The project’s goal is to analyze the
internal structure of active volcanoes,
their eruption behavior and the origin of
their seismic signals.
In addition to UCR, geologists with the
University College of Dublin, Blaise Pascal
Clermont Ferrand University and the
University of Saboya are part of the
research endeavor.
The results of this study will be compiled
with those from other research centers
around the world, which are analyzing fire
mountains such as Popocatepetl in Mexico,
Copahue in Argentina and Mount Santa Elena
in Italy.
