ICE To Face Competition With New Image

In the face of competition, the Institution Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) will be adopting a new image, that includes a new logo and the slogan, "a tu lado" (next to you).

The change is a way for ICE to keep its current customers when the telecommunications market opens up in the coming year, as 14 operators eye Costa Rica for their expansion.

Luis Roberto Hernández, director of marketing and communications for ICE, said the institution has contracted an agency to do an identity and corporate image study.

Hernández said the change is necessary as ICE tries to show that it is modernizing and ready to compete.

According to Erick Jiménez, legal director for ICE, the Ley de Fortalecimiento del ICE, means the institutions does not have to reveal, as in the past, the cost of the study, nor any any other commercial or trade secrets when it is in the best interest of the institution.

The new logo and image is expected to be announced next month (April), coinciding with ICE's celebration of its 60th anniversary.

The newly formed Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones says that 14 companies have applied to provide internet and telephone services in Costa Rica.
