Chavez Swears In New Army Commanders
Caracas -
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Thursday
swore in new commanders of the Bolivarian
National Armed Forces (FANB) in an event
held in Los Caribes Fort in the western
state of Cojedes, local media reported.
Major General Juan Paredes took charge of
the Army to stand in for Carlos Mata, who
was sworn in as commander of the Strategic
Operational Command (CEO).
Major General Jorge Oropeza will direct the
Air Force, and Major General Felix Velasquez
held the position of commander of the
Militia.
Venezuela needs solid armed forces to meet a
goal of becoming a great world power, Chavez
said at the ceremony, and urged the FANB
members to prepare for "the
forth-generation" war.
Chavez also guaranteed the implementation of
public policies, saying that the military
benefits will continue despite the world
financial crisis.
The military event was also attended by
executive Vice President and new Defense
Minister Ramon Carrizalez, Cojede' governor
Teodoro Bolivar and representatives of the
FANB academies.
