Colombia's former paramilitary chief Ever
Veloza, also known as "HH," was extradited
to the United States on Thursday on charges
of drug trafficking, police said.
On Wednesday, Veloza was taken from the
prison of Itagui in northwestern Colombia to
the military airport of Catam in Bogota. He
was then handed to agents from the U.S. Drug
Enforcement Agency (DEA) on Thursday.
Veloza was former commander of paramilitary
group Bananero and spokesman of the Calima
group of the United Self Defense Forces of
Colombia (AUC).
Non-governmental organizations feared that
by extraditing Veloza, some 8,000 crimes
will not be clarified, as he has confessed
to crimes of drug trafficking in exchange
for legal benefits on other crimes.
The Colombian Supreme Court of Justice
approved Veloza's extradition to the U.S.
last July.
Another 14 former chiefs of the AUC had been
extradited last May to face the same
charges.
