Chile's Bachelet Prioritizes
Measures to Face Crisis
Santiago de Chile - Chilean President Michelle Bachelet reiterated
her confidence that Chile will endure and overcome difficulties by
joining efforts to fight the effects of the international financial
crisis.
After some short vacations, Bachelet started her last year of
presidential mandate with a meeting on the effects of the world
financial crisis in Chile, like unemployment and working reforms.
In that context, she announced several measures for a greater equity
in Chile.
After remembering that the Chilean government has dedicated
considerable resources to support of the families, Bachelet
highlighted that this Monday the payment of a special voucher of
about 65 dollars for each family, to be given to 1.7 million
families, among other measures.
The Chilean President made the announcements after a meeting with
the highest officials in the Ministry of Treasury, the Central Bank
and of the Budgets Department, in which she underlined the necessity
to face the international financial crisis.
Bachelet also called the private companies to participate in these
efforts and exhorted the Parliament to speed up the procedure for a
subsidy bill to work that could benefit nearly 300,000 young people.
Consulted on the shipment of a law project that strengthens the
syndicalization, she said that from the beginning the government has
had protecting the employment of Chileans, as a central topic of
discussion in the meeting of the Political Committee or in Palacio
de La Moneda (presidential house).
"The opportunity of other changes in labour matters will b seen and
analyzed and I will decide once we have approved the subsidy to
work, because I believe that there is a point in which we should
concentrate and prioritize what is indispensable, and the
indispensable thing nowadays is to guarantee jobs, " she underlined.
