Dismisses Colombia Official's Remarks On Cross-Border Strikes
Quito - Ecuador on Monday criticized
the Colombian defense minister's statements that Bogota had the
right to attack domestic rebels outside of its own territory.
Juan Manuel Santos was spreading the "doctrine" of former U.S.
President George Bush by saying that, said Ecuadorian Defense
Minister Javier Ponce.
Such claims would only impede the normalization of ties between the
two countries, Ponce said. Ecuador will resume ties with Bogota when
it abandons the "Bush doctrine," the minister said.
Quito severed diplomatic ties with Bogota on March 3, 2008, two days
after Colombia attacked a FARC camp in Ecuador without notifying
Ecuadorian authorities.
Santos said Sunday that the bombing of the FARC camp in Ecuador was
an "act of self-defense."
"To hit terrorists that systematically attempt against the people,
even if they are not in their territory, is an act of self-defense,"
Santos told Colombian daily El Tiempo de Bogota.
