Venezuela Strategizes Housing

Caracas - The Venezuelan government has implemented a new strategy to build residences, Housing and Habitat Minister Francisco Sesto reported Monday.

The State has drawn up new plans to reduce the price of land, goods, and industrialize housing to build within two years about 300,000 houses per year, and cancel the current debt in a decade, Sesto stated.

He stressed that this strategy is a change of paradigm, allowing the State have a direct influence in the housing construction beyond finance, and guarantee that Venezuelans have a place to live.

Official statistics estimate a deficit of a 1.8 million houses and the plan of construction in 2009 amounts to 107,000 in the public and private sector.

This plan is included in the new Housing Law the government recently approved and it refers to the creation of a voluntary savings fund, for any family that wants to have a house and has certain savings possibility, he noted.

Changes also include restructuring of the National Housing Institute, promotion of new judiciary measures against speculation, and larger participation through working tables in communities.
