Eighteen Mara street-gang members have escaped from a prison in northern Honduras, including two men charged in the 2007 kidnapping of the brother of Tottenham midfielder Wilson Palacios.

The inmates escaped through a 15-meter (49-feet) tunnel leading to a storage area at a house outside the prison walls. They were apparently were met by waiting vehicles in which they fled.

The inmates are members of the Mara 18 street gang, and have been implicated in kidnapping, extortion, killings and robbery.

Police identified two of the escaped inmates as Elmer Orellana and Alexander Reyes, who are charged in the kidnap-killing of Palacios' brother Edwin.

The escape occurred Wednesday at a prison in the city of San Pedro Sula.
