Police Officers Involved In Commando Style Assault of Golfito Courthouse

Three police officers of the Fuerza Pública has been detained as accomplices in the "commando" style robbery 320 kilos pf cocaine from the Tribunales de Justicia de Golfito, in the southern zone, last March 26.

The robbery of the Golfito courthouse was carried out with military precision, when a group of men, dressed in commando gear, stormed the unguarded courthouse and hauled off the cocaine that had been recenlty confiscated from a boat in the Pacific Ocean and had not yet been transferred to San Jose for safekeeping.

The Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), along with the Fuerza Pública, began a manhunt for those involved and the recovery of the drugs.

Jorge Rojas, director of the OIJ, said that eight are now in custody and have recovered us$300.000, 18.500 Euros and confiscated four vehicles. Three of the detained were police officers.

Rojas added that most of the drugs could still be in the area, as only a portion of the haul was sold in San Jose, which led investigators to the group.

The OIJ director would not give more details, saying that there are still others tied to the case and more arrests are pending.

The morning of March 26, police got a call from a woman reporting domestic violence, which led the few police officials in the area to respond to the fake call, leaving only two officials to guard the courthouse, which was no match for the heavily armed and well organized team of assailants.
