Paraguay Judicial Crisis Intensifies

Asuncion - Political scene in Paraguay remained extremely tense on Tuesday in the wake of a ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) declaring one of its members unremovable.

According to legal aide of the presidency of the republic, Emilio Camacho, the Court assumed duties that only the executive power, the Senate and the Magistracy Council are entitled to fulfil.

What happened was a deliberate mix of attributions and a usurpation of constitutional actions, said Camacho. It is a resolution signed by friends, he stressed.

Deputy of the government coalition Descree Masi considered unfortunate the CSJ ruling on Monday, declaring unremovable its member Alicia Pucheta, of renowned affinity with opposition Colorado Party.

Representative of Patria Querida Party in the lower chamber, Sebastian Acha, shared this view, describing the event as a "corporate move."

Last week, President Fernando Lugo questioned the out-and-out remaining in their posts by several CJS ministers, who already served their terms in the posts or are about to end their terms.

In Lugo's opinion, if by any circumstance the unremovability of a magistrate is deemed appropriate, this should be as a reward in recognition of his/her performance and honesty. Only the best should remain in the top court, he said.

Today lacking quorum prevented the CJS from being in session to elect a new CSJ president.
