President Extols Latin American Momentum
Cienfuegos, Cuba - Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom stated
Tuesday that Latin America has begun to live its best moments and
enjoys new possibilities.
Colom pronounced those words when talking a group of 178 young
countrymen who are studying medicine in this provincial capital,
155.3 miles to the southeast of Havana, point for where he began the
second day from his official visit to the island.
Accompanied by the Cuban Minister of Basic Industry, Yadira García,
the local authorities and their cortege the Guatemalan leader met
with the future physicians in the University Hospital Gustavo
Aldereguía, endowed with 540 beds.
Regarding the current historical moment the Guatemalan Head of State
commented that each country of the region, in its own way, is
finding forms to leave misery and solve the social problems
accumulated for centuries.
Guatemala is on the way to change and transformation and in that
zeal we have, we count on the Latin American peoples leaning on and
supporting us, among them Cuba, he said.
Of the 178 Guatemalan young people studying medical sciences in this
south-central province, 45 make it by living with Cuban families and
the rest in an faculty of the Latin American School of Medicine
(ELAM), 31 miles away of the capital.
When speaking on behalf of their countrymen's name, Doctor Gerson
Otzoy, a member of the ELAM first graduation in 2005, highlighted
the contribution of Cuba to their formation.
Otzoy congratulated the President of her country to have granted
Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, the highest decoration in Guatemala, the
Order of the Quetzal in the Degree of Great Necklace.
During his journey on this territory, Colom also visited the oil
refinery of the Cuban-Venezuelan firm PDV-CUPET, an establishment of
100 houses donated by the Venezuelan government in 2007 and an urban
vegetable garden in the periphery of this capital.
