Semana Santa By The Numbers
The holy week was full of blood as some 34
people died from accidents and 150 detained.
The majority of the deaths were caused by
murder, although the number of deaths from
traffic accidents was reduced by more than
50% over the same period last year.
Of the deaths, the Cruz Roja Costarricense
(Red Cross) reports responding to 12
murders, either shot or stabbed. Aquatic
accidents took the lives of 10 people.
Traffic accidents were down 66% over Semana
Santa in 2008.
Mario Víquez communications director of the
Cruz Roja, said that this Semana Santa was
quite calm despite the numbers.
Mario Víquez added during a "normal week"
the Cruz Roja attends to 20 deaths. The
director explained that number of deaths
does not include those who die from their
injuries later in hospital.
San Jose led the numbers with the greatest
number of violent deaths.
Also in San Jose some 150 people were
detained on Saturday when the traditional
burning of Judas got out of hand, as dozens
of people, presumed under the influence of
alcohol, went on a rampage on public streets
and in confrontation with police, damaging a
number of police cars and injuring several
police officers.
Similar disturbances occurred in other parts
of the country, but the worst was in Santa
Ana, where the largest number of people, who
were intent on causing a disturbance, fought
with police.
