Managua - At least 10 people were
burned seriously when homemade fireworks
exploded in the atrium at Managua’s
Candelaria Church, Nicaraguan radio reported
on Sunday.
The fireworks went off Saturday night during
the Easter Vigil at the Catholic church in
the Las Americas neighborhood, injuring
mostly young people and children.
The victims were initially taken to Hospital
Aleman Nicaraguense, but they were later
moved to medical facilities that specialize
in treating burns.
Eyewitnesses said one of the victims,
identified as Dilan Esteben Medina Alvarez,
mishandled a homemade fireworks device
during the Mass.
The blast also caused unspecified damage to
the church.
