Easter Holiday Death
Toll Rises To 272 in Central America
The death toll rose to 272 and about1, 219
were injured till Sunday during the Easter
holiday in several Central America
countries, according to reports reaching
here on Sunday.
In Honduras, at least 55 people were killed
and 88 injured during the Easter holiday,
Daniel Molina, spokesman of the National
Commission of Accidents Prevention told
Xinhua on Sunday.
"There have been reportedly in total 61
traffic accidents, 24 people drowned, 31
died on traffic accidents and 88 were
injured," said Molina.
The holiday in Honduras began from April 5
and it was estimated that about 2 million
people went to recreation centers in the
country.
On April 4, the Honduran government launched
the campaign "Safe Summer 2009" in order to
prevent accidents and assist tourists in
beaches and resorts. Around 20,000
volunteers participated in this campaign.
In El Salvador, at least 53 people died
during the Easter holiday. The deaths
occurred in traffic accidents and drowning,
Salvadorean official sources said on Sunday
Salvadorean rescue corps said they assisted
some 500 injured people.
In Guatemala, at least 50 people were killed
and 80 injured during the Easter holiday,
Guatemalan police and rescue corps reported
on Sunday.
More than 30 people were killed by gunfire,
six drowned and the rest were killed in
highway accidents.
Meanwhile, 48 people were killed and 280
injured during the holiday in Dominican
Republic, most of whom died in traffic
accidents, the Operations Center of
Emergencies reported on Sunday.
The Center said there were 84 traffic
accidents in the Easter holiday, in which
253 people were involved and 32 died. Other
13 people died from drowning and three from
alcoholic poisoning.
In Nicaragua, at least 34 people died during
the Easter holiday, Nicaraguan National
Police reported on Sunday.
Eighteen people died in traffic accidents
and 16 were murdered according to Francisco
Diaz, General Commissioner of the National
Police, who added that all of the homicides
were related to organized crime or drug
trafficking.
Nicaraguan Red Cross said it had rescued
more than 200 people in 131beaches, dams and
rivers in the country.
