Poisoned Food Sickens 33 Belgians in Nicaragua

Managua - Some 33 Belgian citizens fell ill in Nicaragua after eating poisoned food, the Nicaraguan Health Ministry said on Sunday.

The 33 Belgians, who were part of a literacy campaign group in Nicaragua, fell ill on Saturday night after having dinner at a restaurant in Tipitapa, 26 km north of capital Managua, said Edmundo Sanchez, an official from the ministry.

Among the group of 100 Belgian citizens, only 33 people fell ill and they have been sent to nearby hospitals, Sanchez said.

The victims had symptoms of stomach and muscle aches and diarrhea six hours after eating chicken and drinking non-bottled water in the restaurant.
