1st Quarter
Inflation 0.83%
Inflation for the first quarter of year was
0.83%, much less that the inflation of 2.25%
during the same period in 2008. The reason
for the lower inflation is based on average
lower prices in transportation, clothing,
food and beverages.
If the low inflation continues, the country
could well see an inflation rate well below
the 13.9% for 2008.
However, experts warn that prices could rise
again as governments pour cash to spur the
economy.
Economic experts say that the price of goods
could rise even higher if the colon
continues to fall against the US dollar,
pushing up the price of goods exported.
On Friday, the colon opened 3.24 colones
lower on the buy and 3.95 colones on the
sell over Monday, reaching a record level of
564.22 for the buy and 573.93 for the sell.
