Panama: Torrijos Lauds Eye Surgery Program

Panama - Panama President Martin Torrijos highlights the benefits of Operation Miracle with 38,328 surgical operations made by Cuban and Panamanian doctors.

On the anniversary of the Program honored Friday in Veraguas, Torrijos called it humanitarian project creating a precedent in terms of health care and in the history of brotherhood between the peoples from both countries.

The Panamanian statesman thanked the solidary support of the Cuban government that along the Panamanian people have helped recover the hopes of people with eye problems.

Torrijos highlighted the need to keep the program running by admitting that when he assumed office in 2004 there was great inequality and lack of opportunities, which Operation Miracle is correcting.

Cuban Ambassador Carlos Garcia Trapaga noted the significance for Panama to open Omar Torrijos Ophthalmology Center, the largest among 61 hosting Cuban staff in 35 countries around the world.

He said that such support "involves a sense of collaboration and unbreakable brotherhood," stressing on the futuristic projection given by President Torrijos by promoting it in Panama.

Operation Miracle began in November 2005 and has so far assisted over 82,000 people suffering, among other, from cataracts, pterigium and squint.

The system also accounts for 32,516 surgeries in Panama and 5,812 from around the world in Cuba.
