QUITO - Ecuadorian
President Rafael Correa
affirmed on Monday that
oligarchic groups are
opposed to the new
Constitution because it
would finish off
unlawful powers.
The oligarchy wants to
maintain the status quo,
which affects the
majority of Ecuadorians
and benefits a minority
in power, Correa
stressed in an interview
with TV reporters.
The president pointed
out that the oligarchy
appears as a civil
society group, and uses
all kinds of tricks and
lies to avoid a victory
in the constitutional
referendum on Sunday.
"Those people know they
are losing their
privileges, and that the
relation of power is
changing with this
regime," Correa
asserted.
The people's revolution,
started in 2007 and to
be consolidated with the
new legislation, aims at
a radical change in
Ecuador's current
economic, social, and
political structures, he
sustained.
More than nine million
Ecuadorians have been
called to vote for the
new Constitution, which
will decide the
country's future. |
