Colombian Government
Forces Kill FARC
Commander
BOGOTA - The Colombian
government said Monday
that a commander of the
rebel Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia
(FARC) was killed in an
air force bombing raid.
Jesus Agudelo, known as
"The Paisa," was killed
Sunday on the border of
Antioquia and Choco
provinces in northwest
Colombia.
Some other FARC members
were also killed during
the air raid, according
to Colombian Defense
Minister Juan Manuel
Santos.
"It was an intelligence
operation jointly
launched by the police
and the Air Force, which
fortunately was
successful. We found a
computer which should
contain valuable
information," Santos
said.
Security forces did not
find any hostages during
the operation, Santos
said, adding that the
guerilla's command would
be weakened due to
Agudelo's death.
"He (Agudelo) was a
high-value target for
us, considering his
cruelty and the damage
he had done to the
civilian population and
to the army," Santos
said.
Agudelo has been accused
of more than 400
kidnappings as well as
the murder of former
Antioquia Governor
Guillermo Gaviria and
former Defense Minister
and Peace Advisor
Gilberto Echeverry.
