Cuban Teachers Arrive in
Nicaragua
MANAGUA - A group
of 47 Cuban teachers
arrived last week to
Nicaragua to help with
the country’s literacy
campaign.
The teachers will work
as advisors to their
Nicaraguan colleagues in
the application of the
Cuban "Yo si puedo" (Yes
I can) literacy teaching
method. The Nicaraguan
government hopes to
declare the country free
of illiteracy by July
2009.
Cuban Ambassador to
Nicaragua Luis Hernandez
was on hand at the
Augusto Cesar Sandino
Airport in Managua to
welcome the Cuban
teachers. He called on
them to make a maximum
effort in their direct
work with a people he
said are very fond of
Cuba.
The Cuban teachers were
also greeted by Irma
Sehweret, mother of Rene
Gonzalez, one of the
Cuban Five imprisoned
unjustly in the United
States for fighting
against terrorism.
Sehweret, who was on a
tour to draw attention
to the Cuban Five case,
noted the beauty of the
work the educators will
be carrying out.
Mario Rivera, who heads
the literacy campaign,
welcomed the Cubans and
said their work will
help many people become
citizens and learn their
duties and rights in the
process taking place in
the country.
