Demonstrators In Protest
Marking 1973 Coup
SANTIAGO - Chilean
police detained 19
demonstrators in clashes
during a march on
Sunday.
The march was organized
to pay tribute to
victims during the
1973-90 rule of Augusto
Pinochet.
Clashes broke out around
midday in the center of
Santiago when a group of
masked demonstrators
threw rocks and bottles
at police and vandalized
shops, traffic signals
and public garbage cans.
Police reacted with
water cannons and tear
gas and detained 19
demonstrators for
damaging public and
private properties.
The march and the
clashes ended at a
memorial wall bearing
names of the victims of
dictatorship repression.
Some 3,000 people
marched to the city's
main cemetery Sunday.
The event is organized
each year around the
anniversary of the Sept.
11, 1973, coup by
leaders of the Group of
Families of Disappeared
Detainees and other
social and human rights
organizations.
