Venezuela Deports Former
Colombian Senator Wanted

CARACAS - Venezuela
deported Tuesday former
Colombian Senator Alvaro
Araujo Noguera, who has
been detained by the
Venezuelan National
Guard since last
Thursday, to Colombia.
A plane with 75-year-old
Araujo aboard left the
Auxiliary Airport of
Maiquetia, north of the
Venezuelan capital, and
headed for Colombia.
Araujo, who is wanted in
Colombia and has been on
the run for a
year-and-a-half before
being captured Thursday,
was deported because he
was carrying false
identification
documents, including a
false Colombian passport
and a fake Venezuelan ID
card, Venezuelan
Minister of Interior
Affairs and Justice
Tarek El Aissami told a
press conference.
The minister said the
Venezuelan government
made the decision on
Araujo's deportation
according to related
international agreements
and without waiting for
a formal request from
Colombia.
Araujo, who also once
served as the Colombian
agriculture minister,
was arrested by the
Venezuelan National
Guard when riding in a
van in the city of
Maracaibo, capital of
the western Venezuelan
province of Zulia.
Araujo, a political ally
of Colombian President
Alvaro Uribe, was
allegedly involved in
right-wing
paramilitaries'
kidnapping of Victor
Ochoa.
Ochoa's brother was the
political rival of
Araujo's son during the
2002 parliamentarian
elections in the
province of El Cesar.
Araujo's son was jailed
last year on similar
charges.
