CAN Urges EU To
Regularize Andean
Immigrants
LIMA - The Andean
Community of Nations
(CAN) urged the European
Union (EU) Tuesday to
hold an interregional
dialogue on regularizing
the Andean immigrants in
Europe and not to call
the undocumented people
"illegal."
Different actions to
protect the rights of
the Andean immigrants in
Europe were discussed at
the first Andean Forum
on Migration held in
Quito, Ecuador, last
week, the general
secretariat of CAN said
in a communique.
During the forum,
delegates of Bolivia,
Colombia, Ecuador and
Peru (members of the
CAN) and Chile
(associate member)
discussed CAN's
preoccupation to deal
with the EU's return
directives which allow
authorities to detain
illegal immigrants for
up to 18 months and ban
them from re-entry for
up to five years.
The forum was
inaugurated by
Ecuadorian Foreign
Minister Maria Salvador
and attended by CAN's
Secretary-General Freddy
Ehlers.
Salvador and Elhers said
that it was pertinent
that the members of CAN
and Chile should work
out an Andean plan for
the human development
for migration.
"In that plan people
must be recognized as
the center of all the
processes of the
political action," CAN
said.
Millions of poor Latin
Americans migrate to
Europe in search of
better jobs, making them
a key source of revenues
via remittances for
their families back
home.
