Colombian Police Seize
us$900,000 From Drug
Cartel
BOGOTA - Colombian
police said Tuesday that
officers had seized
us$900,000 dollars
allegedly belonging to
the "Don Mario" drug
cartel.
Police commander Jose
Herrera told reporters
that the cash had been
hidden in a light
aircraft at an airport
in northwestern
Colombia.
Two suspects were
detained and the nearby
area was being checked
for more hidden money,
he added.
The Don Mario cartel is
one of the most wanted
criminal and drug
trafficking groups in
Colombia.
Herrera said police had
been monitoring and
investigating drug
traffickers from the
cartel for several
months before launching
the operation. The money
was destined for
Medellin city in the
northwest of the
country.
Medellin is considered
one of the most
dangerous cities in the
world, as drug cartels
and deals are rampant
there.
Colombia is one of the
main drug producers in
the world, while
President Alvaro Uribe
has introduced severe
anti-drug policies with
U.S. sponsorship.
