Argentina Reiterates
Worry on US Fourth Fleet
BUENOS AIRES -The
Argentinean government
reiterated its concern
to the United States for
the reactivation of the
Fourth Fleet in Latin
American and Caribbean
waters, according to a
Defense Ministry note
released on Friday.
"We have heard with
concern about the
beginning of operations
by the US Fourth Fleet,
a military action for
which he have found no
reasonable explanation,"
Argentinean Defense
Minister Nilda Garre
told Pentagon Chief
Robert Gates.
The complaint was
conveyed during the 8th
Conference of Ministers
of Defense of the
Americas, currently in
session in the city of
Banff, Canada.
“Loyalty in the relation
is forcing me to express
it, though it may not be
very pleasant," said
Garre, who added that
Arentina will only
attend Unitas Gold
maneuvers as an
observer.
She also told Gates that
the US invitation for
Argentina to join
ALCOPAZ (the Association
of Latin American
Peacekeeping Centers) as
an observer has been
accepted.
Recently, Argentinean
President Cristina
Fernandez said her
government had conveyed
it concern to the US for
the reactivation of the
Fourth Fleet.
"I already expressed my
concern to Thomas
Shannon (US Assistant
Secretary of State) and
he gave guarantees of
the Fourth Fleet
duties," she noted.
On July 1st, Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez
warned MECOSUR (the
Common Market of the
South) of the presence
of the Fourth Fleet.
"This is another
geopolitical issue and
we must ask the United
States what this is all
about", said Chavez at
the 35th summit of
MERCOSUR in Tucuman,
Argentina.
Chavez insisted in his
conviction that the
Fourth Fleet is a threat
and demanded the end of
Washington's
interference in Latin
