Bolivia Constitution
Vote in January
LA PAZ - After 18
hours of deliberations,
the Bolivian legislature
has approved a vote on
the new Constitution,
which President Morales
set for January 25,
2009.
Bolivia is facing a
crucial time for social
organizations and the
government to re-found
the nation through a
Constitution that
includes all sectors.
Groups that support
President Evo Morales
performed a massive but
peaceful demonstration
to request Congressional
approval for the vote.
Morales said that the
cycle marked by endless
struggle from social
movements is finally
over and the new
Political Constitution
is the best guarantee of
a change process that
aims at equality and
social inclusion.
The Bolivian President
also decided to set the
elections of the nine
departmental governors
and municipal mayors for
April 4, 2010 and
postponed the elections
of La Paz and Cochabamba
officials for the same
date, as requested by
the National Election
Court.
Experts from Brazil,
Mexico, El Salvador and
Canada began auditing
the Bolivian electoral
roll and its first phase
is expected to be ready
for the 2009
constitutional vote.
The Election Court also
approved the election
schedule and set the
beginning of the
campaign for November
23.
