Colombia: Crisis Watch
Group Proposed
BOGOTA - President
Alvaro Uribe called to
create a crisis-watch
group, to permanently
analyze the country's
economic situation
before the international
financial turbulences.
During a meeting in the
government house Casa de
Nariño, focused on the
topic of economic
growth, Uribe said the
group should be formed
by representatives of
the government,
businesspeople, social
organizations and
Congress.
According to the
executive, that group
could also promote
foreign investment in
the country, which he
described as a safe
place.
He also asked that in
the next meeting an
updated report be made
on the country's
situation in face of the
world economic crisis
and called to make a
“permanent check-up” of
that phenomenon.
The Colombian government
insists that the country
is in good conditions to
face the international
financial crisis,
opinion opposed by
business circles.
The latter affirm the
economy is heading for a
recession and that the
exports sector will be
affected by the drop in
demand from the United
States, number one
market for Colombian
products. |
