US Blockade of Cuba
Unfair, Guatemalans
Guatemala - Members from
Guatemalan political and
social organizations
termed Monday unfair,
inhuman and aberrant the
US blockade of Cuba and
demanded an end to that
over four decade-old
policy.
"This is the most
dangerous violation
committed against a
people across the whole
spectrum of rights,"
said Enrique Corral,
president of the
Guillermo Toriello
Foundation, who termed
inconceivable that
policy is still
maintained in the 21st
century.
The debate on the issue
increased here just few
days the UN General
Assembly approves a bill
against the siege on
Cuba, which has caused
losses valued at some
$93 billion.
"Despite the
overwhelming rejection
from the international
community, Washington
still maintains that
policy in its failed
attempt to allow a
people to choose its own
way and the right to be
free," former deputy
Alba Estela Maldonado
stated.
The leader of the
Guatemalan National
Revolutionary Unity said
the blockade has
acquired a larger level
of criminality in these
moments because the
island was recently
devastated by the two
powerful hurricanes.
The URNG parliamentary
group promoted the
approval in the plenary
session of the
Republic"s Congress of a
resolution of solidarity
with Cuba to face the
meteorological events
and reject the blockade,
recalled Hector Nuila,
re-elected URNG general
secretary.
Prensa Libre and La Hora
newspapers, as well as
Guatevision news program
have denounced in the
last few days the
negative impacts of the
economic siege in
sensible sectors like
health and food.
