Chinchilla Kicks Off Her
Pre-Campaign With Tour
Of Caribbean
Laura Chinchilla, former
vice-president and
ministra de Justicia, is
set to kick off her 2010
presidential aspirations
with a tour of Guápiles,
Pococí and Limón in her
bid for the Partido
Liberación Nacional (PLN)
nomination
The tour was announced
by a group calling
itself "Movimiento del
Caribe Laura Presidenta"
(Caribbean movement for
Laura president) using
emails to inform that
Laura will be at 10am at
the La Colonia de San
Rafael de Guápiles.
The group is a main
support of Chinchilla in
the Caribbean province.
Chinchilla will be
facing opposition by
former Seguridad
minister, Fernando
Berrocal and San José
mayor, Johnny Araya, who
have declared their
intention to seek the
nomination and have for
months been on the
pre-campaign trail.
Fearing that Laura will
be getting support from
Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias, both
Berrocal and Araya have
warned the prez to stay
away from the
pre-campaign and will
not hesitate to denounce
any pressures by the
Executive Branch on
local committees,
organization and mayors
to support Laura.
Earlier this year Arias
was scolded by the
Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones for
statements made in
public of his wishes of
having a woman succeed
him, pointing his
remarks at doña Laura
and her possible
intentions to run for
president in 2010.
Laura stepped down as
vice-president last
week. |
