Recope Asks For Another Increase In Gasoline Prices
Although consumers of diesel fuel got a reprieve for the latest round of fuel price hikes following the government's action to subsidize the cost of diesel fuel, consumers of regular and super gasoline, are not so lucky as the state refinery, Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope), made its latest request for a hike of ¢58 colones a litre.

The price hike, once approved by the Autoridad Reguladora de Servicioa Público and published in the official government publicatin La Gaceta, will set a record for fuel prices in the country.

The new prices will be ¢714 colones for a litre of super and ¢702 colones for regular, up from the current ¢656 and ¢644 respectively.

Recope was to have requested a whopping ¢85 colones hike on the price of diesel, but to government action it will remain unchanged from the ¢622 colones per litre at the pump, though Recope will get its increase, coming from the government's purse.

The recent devaluation of the colon against the US dollar, the conflicts in Nigeria and Iran and the incapacity to refine are some of the reasons given by Recope for the rising fuel prices.

The increase is expected to be approved and to take effect by not later than the middle of July.

The price of a litre of super gasoline in June 2007 was ¢588; regular ¢552; and diesel ¢392.

In June 2003, the price of fuel was ¢249 colones a litre for super ¢238 for regular and ¢175.5 for diesel. The Colon/Dollar exchange on 14 June 2003 was ¢396.30 for the buy and ¢397.07 for the sell.
