Fire Hydrant Law To Be
Signed Today
The Cuerpo de Bomberos
(fire department) will
finally have a say in
the location and
maintenance of fire
hydrants as the Poder
Ejecutivo (Executive
Branch) signs the "Ley
de Hydrantes" into law
after it was approved by
the Legislative Assembly
last month.
Missing, however, are
the regulations
regarding the location,
installation and
maintenance of fire
hydrants. The
regulations are expected
within three months,
government officials
say.
The Cuerpo de Bomberos
will now have a direct
role in the placing,
installation and
maintenance of fire
hydrants around the
country, changing the
current problem of lack
of hydrants and more
than half of those
installed not working,
mainly due to lack of
maintenance.
The Ley de Hydrantes
allows the AyA (water
and sewer utility) to
charge a set fee by the
Autoridad Reguladora de
los Servicios Públicos (ARESEP)
that will be included in
the monthly water bill,
meaning all Costa Ricans
will finance the cost of
installation and
maintenance of fire
hydrants.
The fee can only be set
once the hydrant
regulations are in
place.
