Interamericana Sur
Re-Opens Partially Today
Beginning today, passage
on the Intermaricana Sur
between San José and
Pérez Zeledón will be
regulated between 5am
and 5pmn, as the MOPT
slowly re-opens the
portion of the highway
that was completely
washed out by Alma.
Tránsito (traffic)
officials will be
located at critical
points along the highway
to control traffic flow
and advise drivers of
what is ahead as the
enter the area of the
highway known as Cerro
de la Muerte.
More than 200 traffic
signs have been posted
advising drivers that
only one lane is open
ahead and caution of
machinery working to
clear the landslides.
Karla González, ministra
de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT) said
that it important that
the fill is well
compacted and that it
can handle the load and
transport officials will
be keeping a close eye
on the situation.
MOPT officials are
evaluating building a
Baily bridge over the
200 metres of highway
that was washed out by
tropical storm Alma or
to continue filling and
compacting for a
permanent rebuilding of
the roadway.
