Avenida 4 Boulevard
Officially Opened
The newest pedestrian
boulevard in downtown
San José, Avenida 4, was
officially inaugurated
yesterday and names "Bulevar
Unión Europea".
Avenida 4 over the past
year was closed off to
all vehicular traffic
and converted into a
pedestrian boulevard
that runs from the La
Soledad church on the
east end to the Hospital
San Juan de Dios on the
west, running parallel
to Avenida 2 and Avenida
Central, the original
boulevard in the
downtown core.
According to San José
mayor, Johnny Araya, the
work is only one of the
many efforts underway by
the Municipalidad de San
José to bring back life
to the downtown core and
use by exclusively by
pedestrians.
Araya added that the
municipality is intent
on recuperating many of
the open spaces that
have been lost to
vehicular traffic.
Making up the plan is
the expansion of the
Avenida Central
boulevard from its
current end at the west
end of the Central
Market to the San Juan
de Dios hospital, the
addition of more garbage
bins along the
boulevards and more
plants and park benches.
