May Most Violent Month
In Last Eight Years
Last month, May, was the
most violent on record
of the last eight years,
according to figures
released by the Cruz
Roja Costarricense
(Costa Rican Red Cross).
The Cruz Roja said there
were 98 fatalities on
site, making it also the
most violent month of
the year 2008.
The majority of the
fatalities were caused
by traffic accidents
(43); 23 people being
killed with a fire arm;
and 12 losing their
lives in aquatic
accidents.
According to Germán
Marín, director de
Tránsito, of the 43
traffic accident deaths,
12 were pedestrians and
8 motorcyclists.
Luis Ángel Jiménez, head
of the Departamento de
Desastres de la Cruz
Roja, expressed concern
on the rise in deaths
resulting from fire arms
and stabbings and warned
people to stay away from
the swollen rivers
during the rainy months.
