Costa Rica Crime Rate:
40 Percent
In Costa Rica, with a
crime rate of 40
percent, nearly half of
the households are hit
by any violent incident
in some areas, vice
president Laura
Chinchilla admitted on
Tuesday.
Gang members belong to
the most marginalized
groups of society, which
are exposed to risk
behaviours, with less
access to basic services
including housing,
health and education,
the Chinchilla said.
Only 25 percent of gang
members completed their
junior high school
education and have no
other labor or
recreational option,
said Chinchilla.
At least 65 percent of
gang members belong to
single-parent homes,
often led by a woman,
who must face the
upbringing of several
children alone, in poor
conditions and with one
or more jobs, she added.
At least 27 percent of
these families have also
a history of alcohol and
drug consumption.
Chinchilla called on all
sectors to contribute
initiatives to curb
crime so that Costa Rica
can be able to hold the
banner of peace.
