Holiday Monday
Although the legal
holiday is today,
Monday, July 28th,
Guancastecos celebrated
their 184th anniversary
of the annexation of
their province to Costa
Rica.
On July 25, 1824, the
residents of the town of
Nicoya voted to make the
Partido de Nicoya, today
known as Guanacaste,
part of Costa Rica. The
event was celebrated fro
10 days between July 18
and 27.
Although the
anniversary, a legal
holiday, is on July 25,
a decision by the
previous administration
moves all legal holidays
that fall on a weekday
to the following Monday,
save for Mother's Day
and Independence Day.
To commemorate the
holiday, Costa Rican
president, Oscar Arias,
held his weekly cabinet
meeting in Nicoya on
Friday. The cabinet
meeting was held in
Nicoya's central park,
where Nicoya mayor,
Eduardo Gutiérrez,
present Arias with a key
to the city.
Music and dance were
part of the festivities
that went into the
night.
Costa Ricans across the
country are enjoying
their three day weekend,
returning back to
business as usual
tomorrow.
All banks, government
offices and agencies and
most businesses are
closed today. The retail
malls are open, however. |
