Hooligans Riot in San
Pedro
35 youngsters detained
and 10 injured, three of
which were sent to
hospital are the result
of yesterday's
disturbance at the
ULatina in San Pedro,
when a group of
hooligans clashed with
police.
The hooligans began
throwing stones and
vandalizing university
buildings when they ere
refused entry to a
concert being held in
the enclosed parking
parking of the
University.
The concert ws the
Festival Snickeer
Urbania, with the "los
Pericos" closing the
show.
The Fuerza Pública
(police) has to use tear
gas by the anti-riot
squad to subdue the
hooligans.
The university building
received the worse of
the damage caused by the
rioters, that then moved
on to the nearby street,
causing damage to nearby
shops and businesses.
Fernando Trejos, mayor
of Montes de Oca, in San
Pedro, assures that
concert was in
regulations with all
permits for a "espectacúlo
público" (public show).
"Tomorrow (today) we
will determine who is
responsible", said
Trejos.
Area residents say that
the youngsters were out
of control, throwing
rocks, smashing windows,
before police arrived on
the scene.
Witnesses say that the
event was badly
organized, with little
to no security, alcohol
taking over the moment.
Some of the affected
shop owners complained
of lack of police
organization in dealing
with the riot, in one
case a smoke bomb made
it inside a pizzeria,
forcing the evacuation
of customers, said the
pizzeria owner.
University officials did
not comment on the
event.
