Government Sets Its
Sights On Developing
Sixaola
Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias, announced
that the country will
develop the Sixaola
River Basin, near the
Panama border, with a
us$12 million dollar
investment, using a loan
of is $9.2 million from
the Inter-American
Development Bank (IDB)
and us$2.8 million from
government sources.
The president signed the
loan agreement with the
IDB this week in the
hopes of developing a
more sustainable way of
taking advantage of the
Sixaloa river's
resources.
The project is to
preserve the natural
patrimony of the river
and reduce the local
area's vulnerability to
natural disasters.
President Arias said
that the project, along
with the help of the
Sixaola communities, the
area can escape the
"cruel
underdevelopment".
The government is
looking to build dikes
and aqueducts that will
hopefully save residents
from the annual flooding
and destruction caused
by the river overflowing
its banks.
Arias added that the
Sixaola area could also
take advantage of the
tourism potential that
would create employment
in the area, especially
among the younger
population. |
