U.S. Says To Support
Ecuador Against FARC
The U.S. government
would continue to
support Colombia and
Ecuador in their fight
against the leftist
Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC),
Linda Jewell, the U.S.
ambassador to Ecuador
said Wednesday.
"We will continue to
assist the government of
Ecuador as far as we can
in protecting the
northern border," Jewell
told a local radio
station.
Ecuador broke its
diplomatic ties with
Colombia on March 2, one
day after Colombian
government troops raided
a FARC camp in the
Ecuadorian territory,
during which 25 were
killed, including one
Ecuadorian, four
Mexicans and the FARC's
No. 2 commander, Luis
Edgar Devia Silva, alias
"Raul Reyes".
Ecuadorian President
Rafael Correa says he
will not hold any
dialogue with Colombia
as long as Colombian
President Alvaro Uribeis
in power.
The March 1 attack was
called a violation of
the sovereignty and
territorial integrity of
Ecuador by the
Organization of American
States (OAS). However,
it did not condemn
Colombia for the raid.
Jewell said Ecuador had
made great efforts to
protect its border with
Colombia, contrary to
the Colombia's complaint
of Ecuador's lack of
cooperation.
"Ecuador, with Rafael
Correa as president, has
made a great effort to
protect the northern
border (with Colombia),"
said Jewell.
