Honduran Teachers: Nine
Days of Strike
A strike of Honduran
primary teachers reached
its ninth day on Tuesday
in the wake of the local
government refusal to
pay the salary for
nearly 3,072 teachers.
Also, secondary school
teachers and education
authorities keep a
strike for 13 days now
in several departments.
Honduran El Heraldo
newspaper said
organizers are expected
to hold a meeting today
to define new measures
to pressure the
government to fulfil
their demands.
According to Alejandro
Ventura, president of
the First Honduran
Professional Teachers
College, demands of the
sector include social
insurance for the
retired and payment of
delayed salaries, among
others.
Participants belong to
the First Honduran
Professional Teachers
College, the Teachers
Professional Training
College, the Teachers
Professional Union, and
the local union trade.
Just one organization,
the High School
Education Teachers
College, is not taking
part in the protest.
Its president Eulogio
Chavez signed agreements
with the government and
agreed to several
conditions detrimental
to the sector. |
